Biofouling is an undesirable growth of micro- and macro-organisms on man-made surfaces. Biofouling causes massive industrial problems by promoting biological corrosion, increasing drug resistance, clogging heat exchangers and membranes, reducing buoyancy and damaging materials in contact with seawater. A common practice to combat this problem includes the use of biocides, which are harmful to the environment. Thus, new environmentally friendly solutions are urgently needed. In this presentation, I will overview modern green antifouling solutions. Examples of antifouling solutions using marine natural products and photocatalytic nanocoatings will be given.
